"A £12m, 8,500 square metre department store in Amstelveen, south of Amsterdam"

Project Details

The leading department store chain in The Netherlands, de Bijenkorf, commissioned Greig & Stephenson to design a new 'statement' store in the prestigious Rembranthof shopping centre development. Greig & Stephenson successfully bid for the project following a previous collaboration with de Bijenkorf in The Hague.

  • LocationAmstelveen, Netherlands
  • Cost£12 million
  • Site Area8,500 sqm
  • Time Scales1995 -1999

The 8,500 sq m store is part of the new Rembrandthof shopping centre in Amstelveen, just south of Amsterdam, which was developed by MAB and Ballast Nedam.

The store is on three levels surrounding an atrium which features a dramatic timber ceiling running from the centre of the store out into the shopping centre, giving the impression that the store is considerably bigger than its 8,500 sq m would suggest.

The ceiling floats above five colossal 8m glazed doors, which when fully opened, reveal a 20m column free area on the ground floor forming the main axis into the heart of the store.
