Project Details

Greig & Stephenson refurbished the £15 million, 80,000 square metre Winkelcentrum Zuidplein shopping centre (originally built in 1972) and created a new extension in excess of 7,000 square metres.

  • LocationSouth Rotterdam, Netherlands
  • Scale87,000 sqm
  • Value15 million
  • Time Scale1999 - 2002

GSA undertook a strategic study of the site in 1991, and the first subsequent phase was the building of a new three-storey extension to the centre.  During the second phase of the project, GSA worked in liaison with local architects in Utrecht on the final design of the refurbishment of the centre.  As part of the programme, circulation routes were clarified by removing back corridors and dead spaces.  The refurbishment links the centre directly to a metro station so that the two buildings are effectively combined.  Other aspects of the renovation include new lighting and ceiling finishes, furniture, graphics, new lifts and staircases, improved storefronts and signage.
