The much-loved market is a hub of the local area, particularly for the British Bangladeshi community and this is reflected by the traders in a wide range of products including clothing, jewellery, groceries, hot food, fish, and product services.
The current market relies on the individuals providing their own demountable market stalls, which alongside adding to the traders’ work, are difficult to manage and operate. In line with the recent growth & investment in the immediate area, the council is keen to strengthen the market to secure its place at the heart of Whitechapel.
As part of the design development, the project team have constructed a set of prototype stalls, from which the traders can trial the functionality as a proof of concept.
The trial began towards the end of summer 23’ and we are currently reviewing feedback from the traders to incorporate into our designs ahead of a planning permission submission.
This is a unique and technically complex site, which demands an innovative design solution. The construction of the prototype has been invaluable to test ideas and gather feedback from the traders and the wider public.
We are currently developing a subsequent mock-up which is incorporating our findings from the prototype and incorporating the aesthetic embellishment that will make the designs more befitting of its place.
